What angles and poses best showcase a pregnant belly? (Even when alone!)
Amanda MOUTOUYou planned to take your own maternity photos, but once in front of the camera... nothing goes right? Frozen body, forced smile, lifeless arms… Don’t panic, it’s normal. Many expectant moms feel awkward, especially when it’s not a pro holding the camera.
Good news : a few simple tips are enough to transform your poses and highlight your rounded belly, without any tricks. Whether you’re alone or as a couple, we’ll show you how to pose with naturalness, confidence, and softness.
An important note: every pregnancy is beautiful
Before talking about angles or poses, it’s essential to remember one thing: there is no "right" or "wrong" pregnancy belly. Whether it’s small, high, low, nicely round, or subtle, it reflects a unique story — yours.
Stretch marks, changing skin, new curves… These are not flaws to hide, but powerful marks of the miracle you are experiencing. You don’t need to fit into an aesthetic mold to deserve beautiful memories of this time. You are beautiful today, exactly as you are.
“No woman should have to choose between feeling beautiful and being herself.”
— A mom like many others 💛
Maternity photography isn’t here to “fix” the image of the body, but to honor its strength, its softness, its journey. And many of us have struggled to feel pretty during pregnancy. It’s human. It’s normal. But it’s not inevitable. These few tips simply aim to help you reconnect with the beauty already present — without filters, without judgment.
1. Relax your body (and mind) before posing
Before even thinking about "posing" think mood. Take a moment to relax :
-
Breathe deeply,
-
Move a little (stretch, shoulder rolls, shake your hands),
-
Put on a playlist you like, whether soft or twerk party, the goal is for your body to be loose, not tense.
Why? Because a tense body gives tense photos. A relaxed body simply shines. And if you want, take a break between each photo series. No rush.
2. Use your hands to tell an emotion
Hands are often “extra” when you don’t know what to do with them. Instead of letting them hang or clench, here are some natural ideas:
-
One hand under the belly, the other on the chest → softness, protection
-
Both hands forming a heart just at the belly button (also to do with your partner)
-
One hand on the lower back, the other on the belly → highlighting curves
The trick: imagine you’re caressing, surrounding, or protecting your belly, like a tender everyday gesture.
3. The gaze, an underestimated ally
Looking at the camera is an option… but not a must!
-
Look at your belly with tenderness
-
Close your eyes and smile softly,
-
Look off-frame (straight ahead) as if someone is talking to you,
-
turn your head slightly toward the light
This gives rhythm to your photos and avoids the “frozen smile at the camera” effect.
4. Slightly turn your body to enhance your curves
Some angles to easily try:
-
Three-quarters : slightly turn your torso relative to the camera, it creates depth and slims the silhouette,
-
Slight low angle (camera a bit lower than the belly): to highlight the roundness,
-
Top view, if you’re sitting or lying down, for an intimate vibe,
-
Full profile, especially with one hand on the belly or one leg slightly bent.
- Straighten your shoulders a bit, and keep your chin relaxed
Feel free to move the camera or your position to vary perspectives.
5. Must-try poses
Want concrete ideas? Here are 3 poses that always work, even without a photographer:
In front of a soft window
-
Position: profile, wearing an open shirt or cardigan
-
Hand under the belly, gaze toward the light
-
Front leg slightly bent for more curve
In a bodysuit or fitted dress
-
Hand on the upper belly and lower back
-
One leg slightly forward
-
Gaze at your belly or closed for more intimacy
Close-up on the belly
-
Open shirt, unbuttoned jeans
-
Hands resting on hips or lower back
-
Perfect for an image focused on maternity
6. Share this moment with your partner
Including your partner is more than a pretty memory: it’s a true bubble for two. Laugh, improvise, cuddle, even dance! The important thing is to be connected, not “Instagrammable”.
And if you film a few clips, you can later show this video to your baby telling them their story even before birth. Guaranteed emotional moment!

7. Remember: you are beautiful as you are
