Organize your at-home maternity photo session: the step-by-step guide
Amanda MOUTOUTaking your own pregnancy photos is a beautiful way to capture a precious moment with authenticity. No need for a professional camera or complicated setups: with a bit of organization, you can create photos full of emotion… right from home. Here is a simple and practical guide to organize your session and succeed in your photos, alone or with company.
1. Choose the right moment
- Natural light : favor late morning or late afternoon, when the light is soft.
- Energy : pick a time when you feel fit, rested, and available.
- Pregnancy timing : between 28 and 34 weeks is often ideal (the belly is nicely rounded but you are still mobile).
2. Prepare the space
Natural light is the key to successful photos. Choose bright and uncluttered places such as:
- In front of a large window or a patio door for a soft and luminous effect.
- On the bed in your master bedroom for an intimate and warm atmosphere
- In a minimalist space to give full focus to your body
Remember to tidy up a bit around to avoid visual distractions in the photos. A light or neutral background always works very well.
3. Gather your equipment
No need to invest: a bit of resourcefulness is enough!
- A phone or camera with good resolution
- A tripod or some books/boxes to stabilize it
- A timer or Bluetooth remote to easily trigger the photo
- A small speaker to play music and relax the atmosphere
4. Prepare outfits in advance
The goal is not to change clothes 15 times, but to have 2-3 looks that work well.
- A cozy look (knit cardigan, pretty but comfortable underwear)
- An oversized white shirt
- A fitted bodysuit or a body-hugging dress
- An unbuttoned jean (not maternity pants)

5. Practice some poses in front of the mirror
Take 5-10 minutes to warm up:
- Try moving gently, without freezing your posture.
- Look at what you like in your silhouette (profile, three-quarters…)
- Keep a few simple poses in mind

6. Involve your partner (if you want)
The session can become a lovely moment for two:
- Intimate photos with hands on the belly
- Tender looks, spontaneous gestures
- Behind-the-scenes video to create a little video memory
It will be a memory to show your baby later, and a real bonding moment.
7. Create an atmosphere
Play soft music, a scent you like. The idea is to feel good, in your bubble. The more relaxed you are, the more natural your photos will be.
A little tip: take more photos than necessary. Better too many than too few!
8. Edit gently
No need for excessive filters. A few simple apps are enough:
- Lightroom Mobile
- VSCO
- Snapseed
Add a light filter to harmonize colors or adjust brightness. And above all: keep your skin texture, your little imperfections, your marks. That’s what makes the photos alive.
9. And after? Turn your photos into tangible memories 📸
Your shots deserve to live somewhere other than your camera roll.
Treat yourself to a selection of your best photos as custom magnets, to display on the fridge, give to family, or slip into a memory box.
In summary
With a bit of preparation, natural light, and a good dose of kindness towards yourself, you can capture this magical period with simplicity and emotion.

But if you can afford it, call on a professional pregnancy/couple photographer — these are very precious memories that you can later turn into photo magnets, you can even add it to your baby registry !
